Bar Harbor, ME and Acadia National Park
Last week, we took the family (along with my mom) to Bar Harbor, ME and Acadia National Park to get out of town and check out the fall colors. This was our 5th anniversary trip and it was fabulous. Both kids did great on the flight and were well behaved for most of the trip...I was very pleased! The colors were fabulous (the pictures don't do them justice) and they just kept getting better as the week went on. I think we missed "peak season" by maybe a week or so, but it was nice to see the green mixed in with the reds, oranges and yellows. What a great place, and great people! They were the friendliest people I have ever met on vacation. I highly recommend this area for any family vacation. We got to tour quite a bit of the park, which is on Mount Desert Island, and eat great, fresh seafood. I tried to pick the best pictures to post, so I hope you don't get too bored as there are a lot of them. Enjoy!!!!
This is the view from our deck of Sommes Sound.
View of the Atlantic Ocean from Acadia National Park. Can you see the cruise ship in the middle? About 2 ships docked at Bar Harbor everyday.
We checked out Sand Beach in ANP. This is one of two beaches in the park that are manned with a lifeguard during the summer. The kids had a great time playing in the sand.
My mom and me at Sand Beach.
My family checking out the waves. This was Brennan's first beach experience.
This is Jordan Pond with the Bubbles in the background. There is a path that goes all the way around the pond, but only walked a small portion.
One of my favorite family photos.
Taking a little rest.
Kami, my cute little tree hugger.
Brennan posing for his picture. I have a few other ones, and I may use one for his 2 year picture.
This is the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse. It is manned by the US Coastguard and in use today. There is a Coastguard family that lives there.
View from the lighthouse.
As we were driving on a back road in ANP, we drove by this little cemetary tucked back in the woods (had we not been paying attention, we would have missed it). The headstones dated back to the 1850's with the latest one being 1924.
It was a very small cemetary with only a handful of sites.
This is Echo Lake, the other area that is manned by lifeguards in the summer. It was quite chilly the day we were there, so we didn't stay too long.
Beautiful view of Echo Lake.
This is a view of Northeast Harbor. There are quite a few different harbors on the island.
This a view of the sunrise from Cadillac Mountain in ANP. This is the highest point in the park and the first place to see the sunrise in the country. We woke up early and enjoyed a great sunrise.
Sunrise from Cadillac Mountain. You can see Bar Harbor in the middle of the picture.
More of the sunrise. We were joined by about 100 other people.
I love this tree, and this is one of my favorite pictures.
One example of the beautiful colors we saw all week long.
This is the carriage road to Witch Mountain Pond. I accidentally picked the long way, so the kids got tired and we didn't make it. There are about 45 miles worth of carriage roads in the park donated and built by John D. Rockefeller. He came to the island to get away from the traffic, so he had the roads built so he could enjoy his time riding around in his carriage. They are only accessible by foot, bike or carriage. You can also x-country ski on them in the winter.
Beautiful stream at the beginning of the carriage road.
We took the family to eat lunch in Bar Harbor and happened to pick a beautiful day. If you look closely, you can see ice cream on Brennan's nose and chin. His words verbatum..."Mmmm! De-wish-ous".
View of Bar Harbor.
We took a small hike up Beech Mountain to the fire tower. The elevation was only 839 ft and the trail was only .4 miles (yes, less than a mile), but it involved quite a bit of bouldering and walking up stone steps. Both kids did great...they hike the entire thing (Brennan needed a little help, though). Was great scenery at the top.
Kami and me taking a photo break.
Waiting for Nana and Brennan to climb the rocks. They both did great.
Almost at the top, but what a view.
Great family photo.
Brennan attempting to boulder on his own. Maybe he'll get into rock climbing when he's older.
Kami and the firetower...elevation 839 ft. Not quite the hiking we are used to in Colorado, but fun nevertheless.
My other favorite picture.
Beautiful view of the colors and the ocean from Beech Mountain.
We went for an actual carriage ride around Day Mountain. The kids loved watching our clydesdales, Babe and Bear, pull us on the road.
View from the carriage.
View of the front of the carriage.
We are waiting for the other carriage to cross the bridge.
This is Thunder Hole at high tide. It's one of the best spots in the park.
Jordan Pond House.
We also checked out the Wild Gardens of Acadia. Most of the flowers were done blooming, but I am sure it was gorgeous during the summer. Brennan is checking out one of the streams.
Here is he checking out the grasses.
We are in the nature center checking out what "paw" prints go with what animal.
